For two years, Bob Hammes, a retired minister, rallied his community to oppose the installation of a cell tower on the Long Point Playground in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
In December of 2020, Beacon/Stetler Communications withdrew its application to erect the tower on the playground. The withdrawal is treated as a denial, and the applicant cannot reapply to install at this site for at least one year.
According to Karen Beard, member of the Charleston Coalition for Wireless Safety Standards, it is probable that Beacon/Stetler Communications will not return to the Long Point Community due to residents' organized opposition to such wireless projects. However, other residential communities will likely be approached in the near future for the same kind of project.
